Yarmouth Boat Yard and Kennebunkport Marina Partnership a Success

The first season of the partnership between Kennebunkport Marina and Yarmouth Boat Yard draws to a close a rousing success. Led by broker Matthew Camp, Yarmouth Boat Yard at Kennebunkport Marina sold three new Pursuit boats and several brokerage boats. As things wind down for the season the Kennebunkport Marina is busy planning for an exciting 2013 boating season.

The latest model Pursuits are now available at Kennebunkport Marina through their partnership with Yarmouth Boat Yard

Matthew Camp will be back on site at the Kennebunkport Marina in April and will continue to work with Cathy listing and selling boats through the winter months. We will keep you informed through the winter regarding our 2013 season, which will include a Demo Days on the water and boat handling courses.

The new searing hot model from Pursuit is the Sports Line. This model features the sportfish appeal of a center console with the comforts of an offshore cruiser. Pursuit offers both a 28' and 31' Sports model. Yarmouth Boat Yard will have the S 280 on site at the marina and it will be available for sea trials. Also, be among the first to check out the design animation of the Sport Coupe SC 365 by clicking here.

The Pursuit S 310

Some of the best feedback that we have received from our Pursuit customers is related to the Pursuit DC 235. After downsizing from larger boats, many customers have enjoyed the ease and maneuverability in the river and the seaworthiness offshore for which Pursuit is famous. Customers tell us they feel more comfortable on the water and therefore spending more time enjoying their boats!

"A Science Experiment in Motion"

With a background in aircraft design specializing in un-manned aircraft and helicopters, Yarmouth Boat Yard friend and customer Hal Youngren has helped raise the bar as one of the design engineers for Team New Zealand in their pursuit of the 34th America's Cup.

Youngren, who lives in Portland, has served as an Aerodynamic Optimisation/CFD consultant for Team New Zealand for the last year and a half as they make advances in the design of their new AC 72 catamaran. The team is preparing for the prestigious America's Cup races to be held on September 2-22, 2013 in San Francisco.

Youngren was recruited by Team New Zealand because of his background in aircraft and wing design and previous work in 2003 and 2007 for the Alinghi Team.

This picture of the Team New Zealand's new AC 72 showing the boat foiling with both hulls out of the water caused a stir within the competitive sailing community.

"The next Cup will be held under new rules, sailing 72 ft wing-mast catamarans," said Youngren. “These boats are completely new, exciting and are total wild cards. In many ways the boats are more like aircraft than sailboats. They use 40m rigid carbon-fiber wings whose design is closer to an aircraft wing. I also work on the underwater appendages that you often don't see like the rudders, elevators and dagger foils." These parts play a unique role in this boat. The NZ boat can lift out of the water downwind, flying on its foils at more than twice the speed of the wind.

Team New Zealand christened the new catamaran "New Zealand" in late July. In initial testing the boat has been clocked at better than 40 knots downwind and 20 knots upwind, said Youngren.

"We even had to upgrade our chase boats for the AC72’s, now we use boats with 1200 hp that can do 55 knots in order to keep up with the new catamaran," said Youngren.

Youngren, who keeps his 19' Boston Whaler on a slip at Yarmouth Boat Yard, said he made seven trips to New Zealand during the design work on the AC72’s. His current design responsibilities are largely handled through Skype conferences from his home in Portland.

Hal Youngren serves as a design consultant for Team New Zealand in their quest for the prestigious America's Cup.

"It is a very scientific process to get this boat tested, tuned and up to speed. We use a very detailed Velocity Prediction Program (VPP), which is a computer model how the boat performs. After each test or practice day there is a debriefing where all of the most recent data is displayed, analyzed and digested to improve the design and sailing techniques."

Yarmouth Boat Yard Achieves #1 Sales Status for Eastern Boats

Yarmouth Boat Yard has been recognized as the number one Eastern Boat dealer in the country. YBY achieved the distinction by surpassing twenty other dealers across the country including larger markets in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York and California, among others.

Eastern Boats are famous for their Downeast-style good looks and rugged, dependable performance.

"The team at Yarmouth Boat Yard has really set the standard for Eastern Boat sales through their boat knowledge, promotion, sales and service," said Bruce Perkins, Eastern's director of marketing and sales.

Eastern Boats is a family run business based in Milford, NH. Founded in 1981 when they specialized in one model - the 18' classic that originated as a Norton - Eastern Boats has grown steadily through building sturdy, non-nonsense boats that are stylish and durable. Today, Eastern offers a diverse range of models from the classic 18' Royal Lowell design to the 35' Lobsteryacht. Eastern also produces commercial vessels including fire rescue boats, fishing and research vessels.

The 2012 Eastern Islander 248 was named one of the boats of the year by Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors.

"We're delighted to receive this distinction from Eastern Boats," said Steve Arnold, owner of Yarmouth Boat Yard. "We're grateful to our customers who have really embraced the Eastern boats. Also, Eastern has done a great job of building a first-class product."

Justin's Hand-Built Boat

Yarmouth Boat Yard's Justin Lester has recently completed building a Jericho Bay Lobster skiff. Justin, a service technician at Yarmouth Boat Yard and graduate of the The Landing School in  Arundel, Maine, began building his boat in September 2010 with plans he purchased from Wooden Boat Magazine.

Justin Lester recently completed this Jericho Bay Lobster Skiff

The boat is named "Maia" after Justin's niece and the Greek mythological goddess. Justin estimates the boat took approximately 400 hours to complete. At a rate of 8 planks a day, the strip-planked hand-built boat began to take shape. Accomplishing the compound curves and and completing the 15 1/2' boat in his parent's 16' garage were the biggest challenges, according to Justin.

It took Justin approximately 400 hours to complete the boat

"My wife and I joked that although we couldn't afford to buy a new boat we could certainly afford the eight planks a day necessary to build the boat," said Justin.

Justin plans to enjoy the boat this summer fishing on Casco Bay and hopes to sell the boat in the near future in order to begin his next project: a 30' Lobster Boat.

Yarmouth Boat Yard Supporting Compass Project

“The kids build the boats…the boats build the kids.” That’s the slogan for the Compass Project of Greater Portland, a unique hands-on program that engages at-risk youths through boatbuilding and rowing programs. The Compass Project utilizes these fun, challenging and rewarding programs as a way of encouraging the development of personal responsibility and community and environmental engagement.

The Compass Project uses boatbuilding and rowing as a way help get kids excited about learning.

Our goal is to help students become invested in learning with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). This hands-on  approach helps foster confidence and appreciation for learning and it is fun for the students," said Shane Hall, Project Manager and boat building instructor.

This spring Yarmouth Boat Yard will be displaying and selling a hand-made skiff from the Compass Project. Proceeds from the sale of the skiff will be donated to the Compass Project.

Science, technology, engineering and math are all part of the boatbuilding experience.

The Compass Project’s 2011-2012 Programs include a year-long STEM through Boatbuilding Programs with the following schools South Portland High School's One Classroom Project, Gorham High School's Bridges program, Falmouth High School's Pathways program, Spurwink Cummings School. One of Compass Project's public events is their annual Boat Building Festival. This popular three day event provides teams of family, friends and/or co-workers an opportunity to build their own boat and launch it at the end of the festival. No special skills necessary, all materials and professional instruction included.
