Proper Boat Winterization Protects Your Investment

Along with the glorious spring, summer and fall boating seasons in Maine comes the reality of winter and winterizing your boat for the season. Winterizing your boat is an important investment that is part of being a responsible boat owner. Ironically, because proper winterization is so imperative most cold weather states like Maine and Michigan report among the lowest number of winter-related boat damage.

Your engine and lower unit need special care during the winterization process.

Proper winterization means much more than applying shrink wrap or covering your boat. There are five key steps that are required to ensure the electrical, mechanical and structural systems of your boat are in proper working order when it comes time to launch your boat next spring. Remember, your insurance policy may not cover damage done by lack of maintenance or neglect.

Key Steps to Winterize your Boat

1)      Clean your boat
2)      Prepare the engine and lower unit
3)      Winterize your freshwater and waste systems
4)      Ready the cabin and interior
5)      Apply proper covering and review final checklist

Destination Spotlight: Great Diamond Island

If you’re seeking a boat-friendly destination with rich history and breathtaking beauty you should consider a trip to Great Diamond Island. Part of a century-old fort and former military stronghold, Great Diamond Island, former known as Fort McKinley, served in defense of Portland from the Spanish-American War to World War II.

Today, the former officer quarters and barracks have been converted to lovely year-round residences, many of which are available to rent on a weekly and monthly basis. Miles of walking trails through old-growth forests, a first-class restaurant, general store, picnic area and beach, biking trails, historic interpretive areas await you on the island.

The only traffic you’ll see once you arrive on the island is golf carts and all if the islands amenities are within walking distance. There is dock space for boating visitors and the Casco Bay Lines ferry provides year-round service to the island.

Yarmouth Boat Yard Achieves Marine Industry Certification Again

Yarmouth Boat Yard has once again attained the Marine Industry Certification. The stringent certification process requires dealers to demonstrate best practice standards regarding customer satisfaction, employee development and training and maintaining and improving all departments.

“We are thrilled to receive the Marine Industry Certification again. While the certification process is exhaustive it really requires a top down review of our processes and we always emerge stronger by implementing positive changes,” said Steve Arnold, owner and president of Yarmouth Boat Yard.

The program provides dealers with a set of criteria designed to create continuous improvement across all departments and, in turn, develop processes for meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

The criteria and business best practices address the quality of dealer sales, service, parts, follow-up, facilities, as well as employee and customer satisfaction. Criteria compliance must be verified by an independent program consultant, and dealers are reevaluated every year to ensure they continue to meet the Certification requirements.

Yarmouth Boat Yard Completes Falmouth Police Boat Re-Fit

Yarmouth Boat Yard recently completed the final stage of a refit to the Falmouth Police Department patrol and rescue boat. The Falmouth Police Department acquired the  2000 Ambar Marine ALSAFE 700 in 2007. The boat was in United States Coast Guard surplus and had been retired in Jonesport.

The experts in the parts and service department began by installing two new Honda outboard engines to provide better reliability and fuel economy. Next, new sponsons were installed to extend the use of the aluminum hull. The final step was to remove all of the finish coats on the boat, strip all of the systems, repair the aluminum deck and coat the hull. The improvements are designed to provide a low-maintenance vessel with maximum efficiency and safety.

The boat will be used for a variety of functions on and around Casco Bay including assisting the Coast Guard with search and rescue missions and helping boats in distress, law enforcement and Homeland Security responsibilities such as escorting cruise ships.

"This boat will perform some critical functions and it is important to have a low-maintenance reliable vessel that is ready to respond, said Alan Twombley of the Falmouth Police Department. "Due to our location we often have a shorter response time than the Coast Guard. The boat will be an great asset in helping keep people safe."

Yarmouth Boat Yard offers boating enthusiasts a turn-key experience offering 150 boat slips, new and used boat sales, storage, parts and service department and showers and restrooms.
